The importance of theatre and the arts need to be more enforced within small communities with no theatre or no emphasis on the arts. A writer for the American Association of Community Theatre wrote that, “Community theatre enriches the lives of those who take an active part in it, as well as those in the community who benefit from live theatre productions. On either side of the footlights, those involved represent a diversity of age, culture, life experience, and a strong appreciation of the importance of the arts.” Theatre affects the way people think and the way they perceive the world. Bringing theatre into small communities will allow them to see more diversity and to have more of an “appreciation of the importance of the arts” or just a better love for the arts. It creates that tighter knit between members of the community. They are able to see each other in a different “light”.
Bringing in a community theatre to Mariposa would help kids, at a younger age, to begin to get involved with the arts and also for older people who may have loved the arts when they were younger but Mariposa does not have it for them now. Virtually the only group that has access to acting and theatre is kids in high school, which only ranges from kids 13-18. I believe that either a community theatre or just a camp for kids to get involved in would be very beneficial for the community and the people within it.
Theatre helps kids with self confidence, communication skills, and gives them an outlet to be creative. The boundaries of theatre are limitless. Why would you want to deprive your kids the opportunity to express themselves? Think of how a kid can develop their communication skills by talking and acting in front of many people. It can help to get a shy kid more comfortable in front of people. There are no correct ways to interpret a part; kids’ minds are able to open up and think creatively to how they can do their own character. They develop their own spin on things that helps them develop their own thoughts, and certain ways they like to act.
We have two separate places where a community theatre or a kids camp can take place and also both elementary schools have multipurpose rooms. I believe we could use the resources that we have to create what we need. I think that, if I tried, I would be able to get many people who would be willing to help with creating this idea. Many people will be willing to help with the directing, the lighting, the set, and, of course, the acting. The plays do not have to have big budgets to begin with, starting with non elaborate costumes and simple scenes. The most important thing is to get the idea started to immediately help kids and the community create that sense of community.
